Why Is My Transmission Fluid Pink?

We hate to say it, but if your transmission fluid is pink, you have a very serious problem with your automobile’s engine. The transmission and cooling systems intersect to help keep the transmission cool. Unfortunately, if one of the systems cracks, the transmission fluid and coolant can mix. This will turn the normally red transmission fluid pink. You may not realize that there is a problem and, as such, you may continue to drive your automobile. This can damage the engine beyond repair.

Red

If pink is the sign of diluted transmission fluid, what is the sign of healthy transmission fluid? The answer to this question is red. You always want red, translucent fluid in your automobile’s transmission. The fluid will start to change colors as it gets older, and we will talk more about this below. This being said, if you change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles, you need not worry about the color.

Light Brown

Aside from red, healthy transmission fluid can also be light brown. In some cases, the color may look more orange than light brown. Either way, the transmission fluid is still in good condition. What this means is that you don’t need to have the fluid changed just yet. In fact, it is common for the transmission fluid to change from red to light brown within the 30,000 miles between services.

Brown

You have a problem when the transmission fluid turns brown. This means that the fluid is oxidizing. Unfortunately, oxidation causes tiny air bubbles to build up inside of the transmission fluid. In addition, the brown fluid suggests that the fluid is burned and dirty. It can no longer protect the transmission or keep it clean. As such, you want to make sure to have brown transmission fluid changed right away.

Black

If you fail to do this, the fluid is going to turn black. At this point, you may start to have problems with your vehicle’s transmission. It may become unresponsive or refuse to shift gears. It may make strange noises or vibrate your vehicle. It may overheat. Any of these things can damage the transmission further. Avoid this by having the transmission fluid changed immediately.

We can do this at our shop, and we have the best auto service shop in town. Give us a call today to set up an appointment to have your transmission fluid changed if it hasn’t been done in 30,000 miles.
