Everyone has had those days. Traffic was tough in the morning, work was long and stressful, and somehow, the drive home is even worse. You notice your gas light is on, indicating that you need to stop and fill up, but that is quite literally the very last thing you feel like doing right now. So you decide to drive the rest of the way home and deal with getting gas in the morning. But is that really a good idea? Is it bad for your vehicle? The short answer is you probably shouldn’t drive on empty.
You Could Run Out Of Gas
Drive any gas-powered vehicle for long enough, and eventually, it is going to run out of gas. When this happens, you’ve either got a long walk to a service station or a long wait for a tow truck or AAA. Either eventuality is going to be embarrassing, time-consuming, and possibly expensive, so make sure that when your car needs gas, you stop and get some.
Your Fuel Pump Will Thank You
Your car’s fuel pump was meant to be submerged in gas at all times. When you drive on empty, you are starving your fuel pump, which can lead to misfires and malfunctions. Any auto repair mechanic will tell you fuel pump repair and replacement is complicated and expensive, so make sure to keep a quarter of a tank of gas in your vehicle at all times. It will save you time and money down the road.
